DG FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES PACIFIES PARA ATHLETES FOR NON PARTICIPATION OF THE NATION GAMES

The Director General of the Oyo State Agency for Persons with Disabilities, Barrister Ayodele Adekanbi, in collaboration with the management of the Oyo State Sports Council, today met with para athletes at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan, to address the issues concerning their absence from the Ongoing 3rd National Para Games.

The meeting, which brought together athletes, sports administrators, and government representatives, provided an opportunity for open dialogue and clarification regarding the circumstances that led to Oyo State’s non participation in the competition holding at the federal capital territory Abuja.

While delivery his speech, the Director General, Barrister Ayodele Adekanbi, expressed his appreciation to the athletes for honoring the invitation and for their patience. 

He also commended them for their conduct during the peaceful protest to the State Secretariat, where they sought audience with the Governor.

Barrister Adekanbi assured the athletes of his commitment to fostering a stronger working relationship between his agency and the Oyo State Sports Council, emphasizing that the welfare and development of athletes, particularly persons with disabilities, remain a top priority.

He expressed deep regret over the unfortunate situation that prevented Oyo State para-athletes from participating in the 3rd National Para Games, describing it as a painful development. He, however, reassured the athletes that necessary measures would be put in place to ensure that such an occurrence does not repeat itself in the future.

Also speaking at the meeting, the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Disability Matters, Hon. Femi Timothy, appreciated the athletes for their understanding and commended the Sports Council management for their efforts. 

He explained that despite the Council’s proactive steps to secure necessary approvals, the process was hindered due to the Governor’s absence at a critical period. He appealed to the athletes for patience and understanding.

Responding, the Acting General manager, Mr Tunde Ajibike appealed passionately to the Director General to assist in facilitating the release of outstanding rewards for athletes from previous competitions, noting that such incentives serve as motivation. 

He also emphasized the need for timely release of funds for national competitions, as delays often disrupt preparation and performance.

Furthermore, he advocated for the upgrade of the Oyo State Sports Council to a full fledged Sports Commission, stating that such a transition would allow for more direct access to the Governor and improve responsiveness to the needs of athletes, including procurement of modern sporting equipment. He noted that the Council has not received new sporting equipment from the government in over 16 years.

Mr Ajibike also appealed for improved support for athletes, particularly in the area of camping ahead of competitions. 

He further urged the government to consider providing financial support for athletes who missed the Para Games to aid their preparation for upcoming events.

Mr Ajibike encouraged the athletes to remain calm, focused, and prayerful, advising against protests and urging them to maintain a positive mindset.

In his closing remarks, Barrister Adekanbi reassured the athletes that their concerns and requests have been communicated to the Governor. He conveyed the Governor’s message that upon his return, he will address the issues raised and ensure that the athletes are duly recognized and rewarded.

The meeting ended on a note of reassurance, renewed hope, and commitment from all stakeholders to prioritize the welfare and development of para-athletes in Oyo State.
