Handball in Nigeria Is Rising and Moving Higher – Coach Agubata Bright
Handball in Nigeria continues to gain momentum, according to former handball international, Coach Bright, who spoke during the Late Babatunde Olusegun Ojuola U-12 Games held at the Handball Court of the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan, on Thursday, February 5, 2026.
Coach Bright expressed his joy at witnessing the Under-12 competition, describing it as a strong indication that the sport is progressing in the right direction.
He commended the organizers for their efforts and appreciated the enduring legacy of the late Babatunde Olusegun Ojuola, who was the first goalkeeper of Nigeria’s national handball team and also the pioneer handball coach in both Oyo and Osun States.
The preliminary matches were played across Oyo and Osun States, after which two teams from each state advanced to the final round. A total of four schools qualified for the finals, which were hosted in Ibadan.
Coach Bright expressed satisfaction with the structure and vision of the competition, noting that more grassroots tournaments are needed to sustain the growth of handball in Nigeria.
“We need to go to the grassroots to nurture and discover young talents across Nigeria,” he stated.
He also applauded the immediate past leadership of the Handball Federation of Nigeria for their contributions during their tenure. In particular, he acknowledged the efforts of Mr. Sam Ocheho, emphasizing that his impact was evident during Nigeria’s participation in the African Cup.
He urged the current Handball Federation of Nigeria to build on the solid administrative foundation laid by their predecessors in order to achieve greater success for the country.
Coach Bright further encouraged parents to support their children’s participation in sports and advised coaches to remain committed to their developmental efforts.
