OYO ATHLETES SHINE AT FIRST WEST AFRICAN PARA GAMES ZONE A & B




Six athletes from Oyo State represented Nigeria and secured distinction at the First West African Para Games (Zone A & B) held at Abeokuta in Ogun State, from November 26 to December 3, 2025.


The athletes who represented the state and the nation were:

Oluwatoyosi Osewa (Female),Olabode Mimololu (Male), Olushola Salami (Female), Waluliah Bashiru (Male), Tajudeen Balogun (Male), Wojuola Olashupo (Male)

They competed under the guidance of the coaching crew led by Gerard Olufunso (Head Coach) and Oladeji Abiodun (Assistant Coach & Helper).



The Oyo State athletes delivered an impressive performance, winning a total of 12 medals which include 5 Gold, 5 Silver, and 2 Bronze.


The highlight of event include


Left-hand contests which took place on November 30, 2025 Male & Female – 70kg and 80kg categories while right-hand contests were held on December 1, 2025 and subsequently, medal presentations took place on December 1, 2025.



At the recently concluded West African Para games held in Abeokuta, the athletes from Oyo state recorded outstanding and remarkable achievements which include Oluwatoyosi Osewa – 1 Gold (Right Hand), 1 Silver (Left Hand) 70kg class, Olabode Mimololu – 2 Gold Medals (Both Hands) 70kg class, Olushola Salami – 1 Silver (Right Hand), 1 Bronze (Left Hand) 70kg class, Wojuola Olashupo – 1 Silver (Right Hand), 1 Bronze (Left Hand) – 70kg class

Waliullah Bashiru – 2 Silver Medals (Both Hands) – in 80kg

Tajudeen Balogun – 2 Gold Medals (Both Hands) – 80kg category.




It is noteworthy that Nigeria Tops Overall Medals Table and emerged overall champion with a total of 129 medals: 59 Gold, 39 Silver, and 31 Bronze.

Male Athletes: 33 Gold, 23 Silver, and 17 Bronze.

Female Athletes: 26 Gold, 16 Silver, and 14 Bronze.




The Country that participated in the tournament were Benin Republic, Ghana, Cape Verde, Burundi, Niger, Liberia, Togo, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, and Congo which cut across several para sports like Para Athletics, Amputee Football

Para & Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Volleyball, Para Powerlifting, Para Table Tennis, Para Canoeing, Para Swimming, Para Shooting, etc.




Prior to the West African Para Games, some of the athletes that earlier participated in the 14th African Armwrestling Championship held at the National Stadium, Abuja, from July 10 to July 28, 2025, won 9 Gold, 9 Silver and 12 Bronze amounting to 30 medals.
