TEAM OYO SHINES AT SOUTHWEST ZONAL ELIMINATION GAMES:
First in Five Ball Games, Second in Three, and Overall Second Place Finish
National Sports Commission, Abuja organized. the
Southwest Zonal Elimination Games for ball sports, in preparation for the National Youth Games (U-15) scheduled for Asaba, Delta State, from August 26 to September 6, 2025, which came to a successful conclusion yesterday, 18th of August, 2025 in Ibadan.
The competition, hosted by the Oyo State Government, was held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan and the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, Liberty Road, Ibadan, with Team Oyo delivering an outstanding performance that earned them first place in five ball games, second place in three, and an overall second position among the six participating states.
The. exhilarated Oyo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Alhaja Wasilat Adegoke, expressed delight at the impressive performances of the Team Oyo.
She disclosed further that Team Oyo clinched first place in:
Male Indoor Volleyball, Female Beach Volleyball, Male Hockey, Female Abula, and Male Football.
The state also secured the second place in:
Female Indoor Volleyball, Female Hockey, and Male Cricket.
This outstanding and remarkable performance placed Oyo State in second position overall, just behind Lagos, while Ogun finished third, Ekiti fourth, Osun fifth, and Ondo sixth.
The elated Commissioner assured that Team Oyo is fully prepared for the National Youth Games in Asaba, expressing confidence that the athletes will not only participate but also win medals and make the state proud.
She further appreciated the other participating states for their spirited competition, wishing them safe journeys back home.
The Commissioner also extended gratitude to the National Sports Commission for bringing the zonal eliminations to Oyo State and reaffirmed the state’s readiness to host more national sporting events in the forseeable future.
