AFCON 2013 Hero, Brown Ideye Announces Retirement from Football


Former Super Eagles striker and 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champion, Brown Ideye, has officially hung up his boots, drawing the curtain on an illustrious career that spanned close to two decades across Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Ideye, who last played for Enyimba International FC, joined the People’s Elephant last season from Al-Yarmouk Sporting Club of Kuwait. He made 10 appearances for the Aba giants, scoring four goals before calling time on his playing journey.

The forward’s finest years came during his spell at Dynamo Kyiv between 2011 and 2014, where he scored 34 goals in 74 appearances, earning a big-money move to the English Premier League with West Bromwich Albion in 2014. He later became a cult hero at Olympiacos, firing in 23 goals in 43 appearances between 2015 and 2017, helping the Greek giants to domestic league and cup titles.



Ideye’s career path also took him to clubs in China, Spain, Turkey, and Kuwait, where he proved his adaptability and resilience across different footballing cultures.

On the international stage, Ideye first represented Nigeria at the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada, where he scored against Costa Rica. His crowning moment, however, came in South Africa 2013, when under the guidance of the late Coach Stephen Keshi, he played a pivotal role as the Super Eagles clinched the AFCON title. That triumph earned him a Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) national honour.

At club level, Ideye’s trophy cabinet includes the Nigeria Premier League title with Ocean Boys, the Ukrainian Cup and Super Cup with Dynamo Kyiv, and both the Greek Super League and Greek Cup with Olympiacos.

Brown Ideye bows out as one of Nigeria’s most reliable strikers — celebrated for his strength, movement, clinical finishing, and relentless commitment on and off the pitch.

*NSC Confirms Key Dates for 2025 National Youth Games* The National Sports Commission (NSC) has confirmed the official schedule for the 2025 National Youth Games, as the nation counts down to the much-anticipated multi-sport event to be hosted by Delta State. According to the Commission, the Games will run from August 26 to September 6, 2025, bringing together the best young talents from across the country to compete for glory and national recognition. NPFL Slams Heavy Sanctions on Kano Pillars Over Fan Violence in Matchday 8 Clash

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has imposed a series of severe sanctions on Kano Pillars Football Club following violent incidents during their Matchday 8 fixture against Shooting Stars SC at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano, on Sunday, October 12, 2025. In a summary jurisdiction notice dated October 13, 2025, and signed by NPFL Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, the league found Kano Pillars guilty of multiple breaches of its Framework and Rules relating to crowd control, security, and misconduct. According to the NPFL, the club failed to provide adequate and effective security during the match, allowing unauthorized individuals to gain access to restricted areas and the field of play. The notice also cited the club for failing to control its supporters, who were accused of harassing players, throwing dangerous objects, and assaulting match officials and the visiting team.
