National Sports Commission and Nigeria Netball Federation Present:
Southwest U-17 Netball Competition and Referee Clinic (July 27 – August 2, 2025)
The National Sports Commission (NSC), in collaboration with the Nigeria Netball Federation (NNF), successfully hosted the Southwest U-17 Netball Competition and Referee Clinic from July 27 to August 2, 2025, at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan.
The event kicked off with a Referee Clinic, aimed at equipping match officials with the skills and knowledge required for effective officiating. Following the training, the netball competition commenced at the Basketball Court of Adamasingba Stadium, featuring four promising teams from the region: Oyo, Ondo, Funar and Saint Bridges.
The tournament culminated in an exciting final on July 31, 2025, which saw Team Ondo emerge as champions, after a fiercely contested match against Team Funar, who finished second and claimed the silver medal. Team Oyo secured third place after defeating Saint Bridges, earning the bronze medal.
The Southwest U-17 Netball Competition marked another positive stride in the development of netball in Nigeria, fostering grassroots talent and advancing officiating standards. With growing institutional support and commitment from stakeholders, the future of netball in the region looks promising.
The final event witnessed the presence of several distinguished guests and sports administrators, including: Mrs. Fabunmi – Southwest Zonal Coordinator, Mr. Tunde Ajibike – Acting General Manager, Oyo State Sports Council, Mr. Kehinde Ojelowo – Director of Organization and Football Association Secretary, Alhaji Raji Adebayo – Director of Sports and Training, Hon. Gbenga Adewusi (Arole) – Immediate Past Chairman, Oyo State Sports Council, Mr. Gboyega Makinde – Former General Manager, Oyo State Sports Council and many more
Mrs. Fabunmi, the Southwest Zonal Coordinator in her closing remarks appreciated all participants, coaches, and officials, and commended the Oyo State Sports Council for hosting the event. She disclosed that a proposal has been submitted to the National Sports Commission (NSC) to include netball in the National Sports Festival (NSF) and the National Youth Games (NYG). While she could not confirm if netball will be featured in the 2025 NYG in Asaba, she assured the netball community that the sport will be included in subsequent editions.
She encouraged players and coaches to remain dedicated and applauded Hon. Gbenga Adewusi for his consistent support of youth netball development in the region.
Mr. Tunde Ajibike, Acting GM of the Oyo State Sports Council, congratulated all participating teams and especially praised Team Ondo for their outstanding performance. He encouraged the Oyo athletes to stay resilient, focused, and self-confident, emphasizing that continued effort would yield future success.
Mr. Ajibike also announced that the Sports Council is actively seeking sponsorship for netball programs and assured stakeholders that another netball event will be hosted before the end of 2025. He expressed gratitude to all referees who participated in the clinic and wished everyone safe travels.
