OYO WEIGHTLIFTING ATHLETES SHINE AT AFRICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Oyo State weightlifting athletes have delivered an outstanding performance at the African Weightlifting Championships held in Ismailia, Egypt, showcasing excellence and bringing pride to both Oyo State and Nigeria.


The trio of Lawal Rafiatu Folashade, Liadi Taiwo, and Osijo Mary Taiwo demonstrated remarkable strength, discipline, and sportsmanship at the championship, securing a total of 6 Gold medals and 3 Silver medals for the country.


The Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Wasilat Adegoke, made this known in Ibadan, commending the athletes for their exceptional performance and dedication. She noted that the athletes represented Nigeria with pride and upheld the reputation of Oyo State as a hub for sporting excellence.


According to her, Lawal Rafiatu Folashade delivered a brilliant performance in the 58kg category, winning 3 Gold medals one each in the Clean and Jerk, Snatch, and Total events. Similarly, Liadi Taiwo excelled in the 77kg category, also clinching 3 Gold medals across the Clean and Jerk, Snatch, and Total events.


Osijo Mary Taiwo equally impressed by securing 3 Silver medals, with podium finishes in the Clean and Jerk, Snatch, and Total categories, further contributing to Nigeria’s medal haul at the championship.



The African Weightlifting Championships, which took place from May 10th to 17th, 2026, featured top athletes from across the continent, making the achievements of the Oyo State representatives even more commendable.



Hon. Wasilat Adegoke praised the athletes for their hard work, resilience, and commitment to excellence, stating that their achievements are a testament to the growing strength of sports development in Oyo State. She encouraged other athletes in the state to remain focused, train diligently, and strive to achieve similar success in future competitions.


She concluded by congratulating the medalists and reaffirmed the commitment of the Oyo State Government to continue supporting athletes and promoting sports development across the state.

FIVE OYO STATE ATHLETES QUALIFY TO REPRESENT NIGERIA AT THE CANADA OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP  By Ayobami Fakorede  The Oyo State Government is proud to announce that five athletes from its Rowing, Canoe, and Sailing team have earned the honour of representing Nigeria at the national level, following their outstanding performance at the just concluded National Canoe Sprint/Kayak Trials. The trials, which form part of the 2026 programme of activities of the National Rowing, Canoe and Sailing Federation, were held at Jabi Lake, Abuja, from March 22 to 23, 2026.
