Two-Day Ibadan Basketball  Championship Kicks Off The 2026 Ibadan Basketball Championship tipped off today, February 6, 2026, at the Basketball Court of the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan. This fifth edition of the Ibadan Basketball Championship is sponsored by Ibadan Ex-Basketball Players in Diaspora, demonstrating their continued commitment to the growth and development of basketball in Oyo State. A total of six male teams and two female teams are participating in the competition. (Male Teams) - University of Ibadan, The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Rising Stars (Male Team), Ollysan, Embrace, and Yellow Tiger. (Female Teams) - Rising Stars (Female Team), and Showtime Angels. The two-day competition, which commenced in Ibadan today, is aimed at promoting basketball, discovering and developing young talents, and nurturing them for the future greatness of Nigeria. Coach Bright expressed his joy at witnessing the Under-12 competition, describing it as a strong indication that the sport is progressing in the right direction. He commended the organizers for their efforts and appreciated the enduring legacy of the late Babatunde Olusegun Ojuola, who was the first goalkeeper of Nigeria’s national handball team and also the pioneer handball coach in both Oyo and Osun States. Gbadegesin Samuel Johnson, in an interview with Proper Sports News during the 1st Edition of the Late Babatunde Ojuola U-12 Handball Competition, affirmed that the legacy of the pioneer coach of Oyo and Osun States will endure for generations to come. Hon. Johnson stated that the late Babatunde Ojuola was Nigeria’s first national team goalkeeper and also his personal coach. He revealed that Coach Ojuola discovered, trained, and selected him to represent Nigeria in the national handball team, where he went on to serve for ten years. He further noted that the late coach produced two outstanding elite goalkeepers for the national team — Hon. Samuel Johnson himself and Bolaji Ojuola, the son of the late coach. *My Mission Is to Discover Future Handball Champions — Bolaji Ojuola* Former Nigerian international handball player, Bolaji Ojuola, has reaffirmed his commitment to grassroots development in the sport, declaring that his mission is to discover and nurture future handball champions. Ojuola made this known while speaking with journalists during the First Late Babatunde Olusegun Ojuola Oyo and Osun Inter-State Secondary Schools U-12 Handball Competition, held at the Lekan Salami Stadium Handball Court, Adamasingba, Ibadan. The tournament, sponsored by the Wise Men Association, was organised in honour of Ojuola’s late father, Babatunde Olusegun Ojuola, whom he described as the pioneer coach of handball in Oyo State.
